Battlefield Map: The Battle of Blore Heath
23 September 1459
Salisbury, turning to face a Lancastrian force which
surprises him, takes up a defensive position on top of a slight rise. The
Lancastrian commanders, being inexperienced, are puzzled what to do. For a
while neither Army makes a move. Salisbury makes a signal that he is going
to retreat by hitching up his wagons. This fools the Lancastrian
commanders into ordering a cavalry charge. This is repelled by the Yorkist
archers. The charge is repeated an meets a similar fate. Then the
Lancastrians dismount and charge on foot. By this time they are exhausted
and are no match for Salisbury's fresh infantrymen. They break and fly the
field. Audley's Cross marks the reputed spot where he was killed.
